Thames Dredging Shortsigthed

Sustainable Decision Making?

It was disappointing to read the story on the back of Fishing News 28 November 2008 that dredging operations for a new containers terminal are to be given the go ahead and that as a consequence a major nursery are for North Sea sole will be decimated. Such short sighted and unsustainable decision may make raw economic sense but ignores the socio economic costs and the environmental costs. How often does the fishing industry itself take decisions in the best economic interest neglecting best socio economic environmental outcomes?  The solution is for fishermen and the industry they are part of is to continue their best efforts to support sound environmental management practices for best local socioeconomic gain. Healthy fish stocks and healthy communities would then have greater future value.

Yours sincerely
